Jeff Clune
About
Jeff Clune is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of British Columbia, a Canada CIFAR AI Chair at the Vector Institute, and a Senior Research Advisor at DeepMind. His research centers on deep learning and deep reinforcement learning, with a particular focus on open-ended learning and the evolution of intelligence. Previously, he held research leadership roles at OpenAI and Uber AI Labs—where he was a founding member—and was a faculty member at the University of Wyoming and a research scientist at Cornell. Clune earned his Ph.D. and master’s degrees from Michigan State University and his bachelor’s from the University of Michigan. He has received numerous prestigious honors, including the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, an NSF CAREER award, and multiple best paper and Test of Time awards at top conferences like NeurIPS, CVPR, ICLR, and ICML.
